This house in a very charming neighborhood is likely to be demolished if a
preservation-minded buyer cannot be found in a very short time. (last update 5/1/07)

The James and Martha Crossgrove House is an 1800 sq. ft. neo-classical two story, two over
two central passage house with a granite ashlar foundation and soft fired brick exterior lined
with adobe brick. It was built circa 1885 and appears, upon a quick visual inspection, to be in
good condition for its age. The house is noted as significant in the agriculture and architecture
Historic Themes category of an Intensive Level Survey conducted in 1994.

The house rests on an irregular shaped .71 acre parcel adjacent to a future trax line (not a trax
stop). The popular Porter Rockwell trail also passes by the home. This home is off the beaten
path and travel through existing residential neighborhoods is required to reach the property.

Draper City adopted an ordinance which conditionally allows certain low-impact uses in
Draper Landmark Register properties. Please
CLICK HERE to read the ordinance. It is
possible only a few of the permitted uses would be appropriate at this location. The Utah
State Historic Preservation office has been asked to determine if the home appears to be
eligible for the National Register. Restoration of some missing features would increase the
likelihood of a successful nomination. National Register listing could bring 20% rehabilitation
tax credits into play.

History -
In addition to farming, James Crossgrove was a mason and a brick manufacturer.
Crossgrove both produced the bricks and personally built this house. His brother-in-law, Louis
Mousley was a carpenter and is known to have built the staircase in return for James paying a
$300 polygamy fine for Louis. Both craftsmen were trained in their trades in the Delaware
Valley.

Martha Crossgrove inherited a number of fine horses from her father. She bred those horses
and eventually sold the herd to purchase the farmland upon which the home was built.

Granddaughter Hulda Crossgrove lived her entire life in the home. Her recollections and
additional history can be found by clicking HERE
